A Pause

At times
A pause
Is needed
A break
In time
To rest
In the stillness
Reflect upon
What has been
And prepare for
What is yet to come

The sun shines bright
On a world of whistling white drifts and slush-filled alleyways
And on the air
There is a touch of spring
A sense
Of renewal
Of awakening
Of forward progress

We wait
Doors latched
And shades drawn
For the cold to pass
For the days to lengthen
And the sun to fall
In longer periods of time
Upon the frozen ground
Warming
Not only the worms and the colonies upon colonies of microscopic lifeforms that lie dormant underground
But also the unbound faces and hands
Of eager lives
Waiting to be lived

Arcane

You’re so
Arcane
In
Every way
Just a stalwart to be
For the better part
Of a century

You kept
So quiet
As every tear drop
Fell
Upon the stone

Watch the hands
On the clock
Far above
Turn the day away
As the sun turns
Just the same
‘Round the same
Same old Earth
As it was
As you were

Start to see
What else could be
But maybe not
Not for me

Hood to light
Dark as
Could ever be
Night
Might
Find hands held tight
Silk
Pray slow
To remain/to grow
Not to fade
Not to wilt

The Oarfish Has Arisen

The Oarfish has arisen
From its home beneath the waves
It journeys from the shadowed depths
To the surface to be safe
It feels the earth’s vibrations
In the silence where it dwells
And in this way knows many secrets
Which it can nor will ever tell

The Oarfish has arisen
Board the windows
Lock your doors
Put all your children safe to bed
Bag the levees and the shores
The Oarfish has arisen
Now we wait with bated breath
To see what follows in its wake
Hoping for life, and not for death.

The Flapping of the Smallest Feather Wings

The outcome of the daily weather does not depend entirely upon
The gusts of wind which carry over the oceans and seas
From the turning of the Earth
And the centrifugal force of its incredible mass
Rather
There are the most minute imperfections
Movements
Of beasts and of individuals
That shift the balance ever so slightly
But ever so crucially
The flapping of the smallest feather wings
Twisting in time
Across open plains many miles away

For every action
There is an equal and opposite reaction
A shifting in the universe in which the change occurs
Which ripples out
As a wave
Interacting with
Cancelling out and strengthening
Other waves and particles

We are responsible
Each and every one
For the impact that we have
On the environment and the lives we interact with
As our choices
Reach out far beyond ourselves
Into other worlds
Into other stories
Like extensions of ourselves
Through which we experience
The world around us

Life, and the Path It Follows

The Earth is alive
Even when it is sleeping
Under so many layers
Of ice and debris
Clinging tightly
To the frozen ground
As loose debris blows
Gently over the layered snow
Traveling
From place to place
Participating
In an equation far too complex to be captured within the realm of our understanding
An equation based on chaotic interaction
And chance
And a pesky little detail
Ascribed the title of “free will”
Or life
A far more complicated chain of events
Beautiful
And utterly overwhelming
In the eccentricities by which
It impacts the universe it interacts with
Which is in itself
Utterly unique and completely without equal
In the grandeur by which it is arranged
And the incomprehensible possibilities
That it could be arranged any other way
And enable our lives to carry out as they do
Moving
And carving
Little lines through everything we touch
Leaving reminders
That we were there
That we existed
Enduring
And deeply impactful
To all of the other objects and living things
With which we share this space
To the situations that they encounter
As well as in the decisions they make when confronted with them
For we are a part of something far larger and more powerful than ourselves
Life
And the path that it follows at it unfolds before all of our eyes
The stories that are written
The loves that are shared
And the marks that are left
In time
We build
A legacy that we are proud of
Marks that tells a story of truth and of honor
Of growth and of development
As we learn to be
Something more than just a collection of cooperating cells
Looking out for itself in a world of enemies and friends alike
But rather an active participant
In an experience shared
With everything we interact with
From the smallest of this worlds materials
To the massive stars and black holes that fill the night sky
All engaged in a cosmic dance
Through time itself
A movement which started
Far before we arrive
And will continue
Long after we are gone

The Cold Slips In

The cold slips in
Through the thin sheets of glass which separate
What lies within
From the outer world
And over time
A chill is felt
As hairs stand on end
A warning
A call for warmth and a reminder
That harsh conditions exist
Just inches from the space we inhabit
Inhospitable
Unfriendly
Improbable and yet
Here we remain
Huddled in structures constructed
From the dried remains of much taller organisms
Sealed with the earth
And made to shine
With any color under the sun

On a Cold Day in January

On a cold day in January
I watch
As snowflakes fall to the frozen ground
Softly
Retaining their elegant structure
To form a thin membrane across the surface of the Earth
Even in distribution
A reflection
In so many ways
Of the very symmetry each individual shape carries in it’s fragile form

In time
The air will grow warmer
And the frigid strands
Which stretch across the nearly unobservable spaces between
Will slowly melt
As their contents pool and join
To sink beneath
And travel ever onward

All the World Waits

All the world waits
For you
Though surely there are times
Where it may feel
Like it is just beyond your reach
A realm unto itself
To be observed
But not to be interacted with

Know this
That you are
Not alone

There is so much that is not understood
About this place which we call home
So many facets of life
That are utterly beyond comprehension
From the grand and marvelous
To the seemingly mundane

Even the stars themselves
Which shine so bright in the stars above
Once thought to be fixed points of pure light
Infinite and absolute
Are but decomposing remnants
Scattered across great expanses of empty space
Many long dead
Remembered only by their lingering echoes

Our impact on those around us
Is not always clear
Nor can it be easily defined
By what we can immediately understand
And we are left to wonder
What purpose we serve

But just as the stars above
Though surely someday we will fade
Our legacy remains

Where We Fit In

There is no sky above
No Earth below
Just space
Time
Unfolding
Collapsing and expanding
Flowing through
Around
Between
All of objects and the distance between them
Filling
Each and every corner
Until there is nothing to separate
The black from the white
The light from the darkness
The shadows of night
From the glow of the day

We are but an audience
Watching
Waiting
Seeking only to know
Where we fit in
