In All Things

In all things

The blade of grass
The drop of dew

The girl on the other side of the world who does not know
How much she really means
But will soon
Even if she forgets again soon after

In all things

Light
And a potential for it to go out
Just the same as for it to grow
Brighter
Than that which shines from the burning star
Around which we turn

In all things

A voice
A song that has been sung
For many years
And will continue
Long after we all have passed

In all things

I am
Nothing
But a passing breeze
A leaf
Which is carried thusly
To fall and break apart
To return once more

In all things

You

A Pause

At times
A pause
Is needed
A break
In time
To rest
In the stillness
Reflect upon
What has been
And prepare for
What is yet to come

The sun shines bright
On a world of whistling white drifts and slush-filled alleyways
And on the air
There is a touch of spring
A sense
Of renewal
Of awakening
Of forward progress

We wait
Doors latched
And shades drawn
For the cold to pass
For the days to lengthen
And the sun to fall
In longer periods of time
Upon the frozen ground
Warming
Not only the worms and the colonies upon colonies of microscopic lifeforms that lie dormant underground
But also the unbound faces and hands
Of eager lives
Waiting to be lived

Life, and the Path It Follows

The Earth is alive
Even when it is sleeping
Under so many layers
Of ice and debris
Clinging tightly
To the frozen ground
As loose debris blows
Gently over the layered snow
Traveling
From place to place
Participating
In an equation far too complex to be captured within the realm of our understanding
An equation based on chaotic interaction
And chance
And a pesky little detail
Ascribed the title of “free will”
Or life
A far more complicated chain of events
Beautiful
And utterly overwhelming
In the eccentricities by which
It impacts the universe it interacts with
Which is in itself
Utterly unique and completely without equal
In the grandeur by which it is arranged
And the incomprehensible possibilities
That it could be arranged any other way
And enable our lives to carry out as they do
Moving
And carving
Little lines through everything we touch
Leaving reminders
That we were there
That we existed
Enduring
And deeply impactful
To all of the other objects and living things
With which we share this space
To the situations that they encounter
As well as in the decisions they make when confronted with them
For we are a part of something far larger and more powerful than ourselves
Life
And the path that it follows at it unfolds before all of our eyes
The stories that are written
The loves that are shared
And the marks that are left
In time
We build
A legacy that we are proud of
Marks that tells a story of truth and of honor
Of growth and of development
As we learn to be
Something more than just a collection of cooperating cells
Looking out for itself in a world of enemies and friends alike
But rather an active participant
In an experience shared
With everything we interact with
From the smallest of this worlds materials
To the massive stars and black holes that fill the night sky
All engaged in a cosmic dance
Through time itself
A movement which started
Far before we arrive
And will continue
Long after we are gone

The Cold Slips In

The cold slips in
Through the thin sheets of glass which separate
What lies within
From the outer world
And over time
A chill is felt
As hairs stand on end
A warning
A call for warmth and a reminder
That harsh conditions exist
Just inches from the space we inhabit
Inhospitable
Unfriendly
Improbable and yet
Here we remain
Huddled in structures constructed
From the dried remains of much taller organisms
Sealed with the earth
And made to shine
With any color under the sun

Each With Their Own Story to Tell

Do we not all exist
As figures in a grand portrait
Captured
Each second
In a cosmic still-life
Our lives existing
Within
As well as between
Each vibration
Each motion
Each advancement of the scene?

We are all here
Together
Huddled
On an improbable
And utterly awesome
Sphere of space debris
That is spinning through space
And time
With a rapidity that we struggle to comprehend,
Living
Breathing
Waiting
For our chance
To be.

Each one of us,
At one time or another,
Feel as if we are but side characters –
Unseen,
Unheard,
Unwanted,
Unneeded,
Our mere existence
Just a product of decisions made
Beyond our control
And without our awareness.

We may feel as though
Life is not for us to live,
To be observed,
But not to be participated in.

This is
Of course
An unsettling and ultimately false perspective.

In any given moment
There is,
By nature of the reality in which we exist,
No distance between,
No difference between,
Any one of us,
For we are all of the same beginnings
And will someday find ourselves subject to
The same end.
Fading in an out
Of an ever-changing world of light and matter,
None no more valuable,
Nor more despicable,
Than the last,
All worthy of love,
Of kindness,
Of respect and recognition,
As we are all just collections of matter,
Each unique
And each with their own story to tell.

To Not Be Filled with Wonder

Inspired by the poem Not to Wonder by Tornadoday.

To not be filled with wonder
When staring up at the starry skies above
When looking out at the great expanse and seeing only light
In all directions
Moving
So fast
And yet so slowly
As representations of long-dead distant worlds float ceaselessly through empty space
Waiting to be discovered
Waiting to be seen
And experienced
To be known
And therefor to have existed

To not be filled with upmost awe
When gazing down through focused glass
When observing clearly a tiny realm and revealing only chance
And strings
That extend in all directions
Moving
Rapidly
And yet with such precision
Carving representations of possibilities limitless and relatively absurd in nature
Waiting to be observed
Waiting to be recorded
And understood
To be known
And therefor to have existed

Home

Whether you return after the day is done
To a warm bed and a meal
Or to a place where no-one goes
Where the world outside does not seem real
You should always know you have a home
You have a place where you are valued
A space in which you and your life exist
Where it would not be the same without you
Your impact on this world is not based
On what you have acquired
But those that you have interacted with
The lives you have inspired
The people who will remember you
Long after you have departed
The lives that you have helped to grow
And the change that you have started
Your story is what ties you here
It’s what’s leads you to where you’re going
It’s what drives the choices that you make
And helps you to keep going
So don’t give up; you’ve much to give
You’ve a story left to write
Tell it with courage, love, and kindness
Through the day and through the night
