You.

My dear,
Do you not understand,
Your value is inherent;
There is nothing can define your worth,
In your heart it is apparent.

The way you smile,
The way you laugh,
The way you view the world around you
Each little thing that makes you “you”
Makes me so glad I’ve found you.

I care for you,
Just as you are,
And I will always stand beside you.
But darling,
You must learn to love yourself
And know your value is inside you.

For the fuel burns and the world turns
Whether it does so with or without you,
And yes, there are people and things
That do not care about you.

What matters most
Is that you know
You matter and you are worth knowing.
Not for the work you do,
But because you’re you,
Still learning and still growing.

You Are Always Near

My darling though there have been times
When your body is not here
I know I’m never quite alone
For you are always near

I hear you in the blowing wind
Which dances with the trees
I see your smile in the sun
Which filters through the leaves

When rain or snow fall from the sky
I fear not for the weather
I am kept warm by the memories
Of times we’ve spent together

So though there may surely be days
Where we are kept apart
I know you’ll always be with me
In my head and in my heart

Winter Kisses

Hopes and wishes
Winter kisses
Snowflakes in your hair

Pine and holly
Spirits jolly
Good will in the air

Each year this season
Another reason
For time with those we love

As stars shine bright
All through the night
Their light falls from above

So be of good cheer
As we gather here
In the fire’s warming glow

Should your heart ever stray
Think back to this day
And you will always know

Waiting to Be

There was a time when our dreams
Were just within reach
There was nothing that could not be accomplished
Nothing we could not attain
And all that stood between
What is and what could be
Was our own imagination

Now so many days have passed
And it can feel
Like all we have acquired
Is an emptiness that slowly grows
Fed by our desires
And the perception we have
That they cannot be met

Our hearts grow tired
And we are worn thin
Sleeping later and later each day
Looking out the window
And thinking only of opportunities missed
Rather than seeing
Those that still await

Bitterness
And resentment thrive
In fertile beds of broken promises
Nourished by doubt
And diminished expectations
As we see only what could have been
Ignoring what still could be

For I have learned
And am learning still
That opportunity abounds
In each and every minute
That though we may fail
Or even fail to act
There is always hope

So long as we do not give up
So long as we persist
We can still dream
And those dreams are within reach
For in each minute there are endless possibilities
Just waiting
Waiting to be

Tired

Woke up tired
So long
So long ago
Been so many nights
Sleeping alone
How many more
Don’t really know

Just want to say
Don’t know what to say
Wish it weren’t this way
Wish it weren’t today

I’ve been walking steady
But I am going nowhere
I’ve been getting ready
For what?
I don’t know, nor care
You’ve been in my head
But there’s not anyone else there
I’ve been feeling dead
But I still feel like I have something to lose
Is it true?
If so, what do I need to do?
To prove
That life is a choice
I want to choose it
With you

A broken record still plays a tune
A barred window still lets the light through
Your heart may feel barren
And mine at times too
But that doesn’t mean anything
How I wish that you knew
I may be tired
But my dear I’m not tired of you

The Value of Contrast

How I have missed
The rushing wind
The fluid motion
And the ground passing quickly beneath my feet

It would seem I had forgotten
The importance of moving forward
Of unallocated time
Surrender to chance and momentary escape
From the stagnant monotony of a rushed life

I must find balance though
As time is precious
And obligations must be observed
For to see with narrow vision
Even that which is of great beauty and worth
Is to ignore the value of contrast

How strange
This life we lead
Where we learn so much but often fail so to apply the lessons
Grasping it seems
At concepts simple
Until we approach them ourselves and come to realize
That there are always facets elusive our awareness

We can only hope
That with time and a patient heart
We can understand
Even in the smallest way
How to make the most of what we have
How to find satisfaction in imperfection
And even rejoice in failure
Knowing
That no action is without consequences
And that mistakes made
Are opportunities still
To overcome and grow in our resolve
To see the flaws inherent in our design
And adapt thusly

Home

Note: This piece was written in collaboration with Blackbird, of the blog Wandering Thoughts.

Blackbird:

What makes a house a home?
Surely it’s not a manicured front lawn
Or a grand foyer with antique lighting
Maybe it could be, but not without
Paint chipping off the front porch
The marks on the walls and floors
Worn by furniture well used.

Without the pen lines on the wall
Where your parents marked your
And your brother’s heights each year
And without the paint chips that
You never get around to fixing
This is merely a house
Void of a beating heart
Auroraboros:

The warmth afforded by a fire
Does not come from the careful arrangement of logs
It is not a product exclusive to the finest marble fireplaces
And the presence of sparks and dried wood does not necessitate heat

There are some facets of life
That cannot be manufactured
Cannot be wrapped up neat and tidy in a brightly colored package
And will never be contained or easily reproduced

I do not know what makes a home
For home can mean many things to many different people
Home is where our lives unfold
Where we are able to let down our defenses
Knowing we are safe and secure

Sometimes what we know as home
Is not what it seems
And sometimes we find our homes
In places we never would have expected

On These Cloudy, Overcast Days

On these cloudy, overcast days
The grey flows down from above like rain
Pouring over and seeping deep within
All that can be seen
From the tallest buildings in the heart of downtown
To the fields and trees lining the windswept interstate

The mind wanders
And with it
The unfolding events of the afternoon
Stumbling through the thin daylight
Searching
For any familiar sign
A color burst from a tree still holding tight to it’s foliage
Or the delicate precision of a migrant flock of patterned geese

There is always beauty to be found
Here in this world we inhabit
On days of clear, blue skies
Just the same as
On these cloudy, overcast days

The Passage of Time

Oh, how relentless, the passage of time
As leaves once green with the warmth of the summer sun now fade and fall
And a chill pervades the air we draw from the dim stillness

How I remember the days we first shared
The crisp crackle of frozen snow beneath our feet
And the howling of the winds
Mirroring as it were
The tundra that lay within our hearts

Then how the seasons changed
And with time
The ice gave way to streams and then to falling rain
Which nourished the soil to produce grass and green and life once more
Soon to flourish in the heat and sun of the summer months
Just as our love would spring from the fertile earth of the time we spent
Sharing our thoughts and dreams
Beneath the same bright sun

Now as we move once more
To the depth of winter
May our hearts remain lit
May we remember
That we have weathered storms of hail and sleet
Just the same as warm rain and bright lightning

May we hold close what we have gained
And mourn not what is no longer
For there will always be days of cold and darkness
Just as there will always be redemption in the return of the warmer months

My love for you will not fade as the falling leaves
It will not grow dim with the shortening of the days
I will not grow cold, though the air and earth beneath our feet may freeze
Time may pass
But my love for you will remain

Passion Pulse

Do you still feel it
The passion pulse
The glow from within
Beckoning us closer
Drawing our breaths to heated shivers
Sending waves of anticipation across our eager skin
As wild eyes
Search without restraint

How I long to hold
Your fragile form
To breathe deep the fragrance
That exudes from deep beneath the surface
As your presence washes over mine
Taking with it
All I have to give
